MG Mgf SP Performance MGF Cheetah

In early 1997, Stephen Palmer at SP Performance offered modifications to the 1.8 K-Series engine. Notably a supercharger, boosting power from 143 to 207 bhp (154 kW; 210 PS). The 0-60 time was reduced from 8.5 to a claimed 5.5 seconds and the top speed increased to a limited 150 mph (240 km/h). The brakes were upgraded to competition discs with ABS wrapped up in 17" alloy wheels. Other differences were a beefier bodykit and an aerodynamically aiding adjustable front splitter. The complete package cost £29,500, and although that sounds expensive, it was still only the same price as a 2.8 litre BMW Z3 and £4,000 less than the Lotus Elise Sport. It was referred to, in SP Performance's original press release, as "The Affordable Supercar".

MG Mgf History

The MG MGF Cars was launched in the autumn of 1995 by the MG Rover Group, making it the third all-new cars to be launched in its first full year since the BMW takeover. It was powered by a 1.8 L K-Series 16-valve engine, the basic having 118 hp (87 kW) while the more powerful VVC (variable valve control) had 145 hp (107 kW). Rover Special Projects oversaw the development of the F's design and before finalising the styling bought-in outside contractors to determine the most appropriate mechanical configuration for the new MG MGF Cars. Steve Harper of MG MGA Developments produced the initial design concept in January 1991 (inspired by the Jaguar XJR-15 and the Ferrari 250LM), before Rover's in house design team refined and the concept under the leadership of Gerry McGovern. An interesting feature of the MG MGF Cars was its Hydragas suspension, a system employing interconnected fluid and gas displacers which provided a surprisingly compliant ride but which could be tuned to provide excellent handling characteristics. The folding soft top mechanism was licensed from Mazda as used in their MX5, which simplified the design process. The MG MGF Cars quickly shot to the top of the affordable sports car charts in Britain and remained there until the introduction of the MG TF in 2002.
