In early 1997, Stephen Palmer at SP Performance offered modifications to the 1.8 K-Series engine. Notably a supercharger, boosting power from 143 to 207 bhp (154 kW; 210 PS). The 0-60 time was reduced from 8.5 to a claimed 5.5 seconds and the top speed increased to a limited 150 mph (240 km/h). The brakes were upgraded to competition discs with ABS wrapped up in 17" alloy wheels. Other differences were a beefier bodykit and an aerodynamically aiding adjustable front splitter. The complete package cost £29,500, and although that sounds expensive, it was still only the same price as a 2.8 litre BMW Z3 and £4,000 less than the Lotus Elise Sport. The MG MGF Cars was launched in the autumn of 1995 by the MG Rover Group, making it the third all-new cars to be launched in its first full year since the BMW takeover. It was powered by a 1.8 L K-Series 16-valve engine, the basic having 118 hp (87 kW) while the more powerful VVC (variable valve control) had 145 hp (107 kW).
